Naxxar Victorians hosted their annual awards night – Night of the Victorians – this month to recognise the players’ contributions and efforts throughout the 2025/26 season in MAFA Division 2.
This year’s event, held at The Railway Pub in Birkirkara, hosted players, staff and committee members for an evening of food and drink, with the highlight being the club’s award ceremony, with accolades being given for five different categories: Most Improved Player, Most Committed Player, Top Scorer, Players’ Player, and finally Player of the Season.
This year’s Player of the Season award, voted for by the coaching staff, was given to club captain Daniel Agius, who also won the squad’s vote as the Player’s Player.
“At the end of the day, this is not an award that’s just for me,” Agius said, ” every player is part of the team and we all take to the pitch together, so if I’ve performed well that means we all have overall.”
This year’s Most Improved Player Award was given to midfielder Andre Camilleri, who has risen to the starting 11 in the latter half of the season, while Maverick Grech was named Most Committed Player of the Season, in appreciation for his commitment towards safeguarding the team’s balance on the pitch when positions were in jeopardy.
This year’s Top Scorer Award had a different winner from previous seasons, as Fabrizio Farrugia handed over the title to no less than three different players this season as Liam Sciberras, Mahmoud Elousta, and Gabriel Scerri all finished the season with three goals under their belt.
Speaking to the players after the awards were handed out, coach Connor Muchmore showed his gratitude towards his squad, urging them to look ahead to the next campaign with greater commitment.
“Thank you for the season and the commitment you’ve given, but the aim now is how we move forward,” Muchmore said.
“As a coach for my club – I’ve been here long enough to call this club my own – I do not want any lowering of standards. We’ve been working hard: coaching staff, committee – Karl (Borg) never stops. You can hopefully see the work we are doing.
“For me, preseason is already more structured than what we had and what you’ve seen previously. I now have two fantastic assistants with me, and I have already seen improvement from March til the end of the season, and not just from a team aspect, but even behind the scenes.
“We are the first amateur team in MAFA to effectively have played four games in a row against foreign opposition, and I have already organised two more for the end of next season. It was our aim from the start.
“The effort I’m seeing in training is exactly what I told you I was expecting, and now we have to continue growing as a group to take those steps and fulfill our potential.”
