MATCH REVIEW: Much to build upon despite loss to San Gwann

In the first match of the new year, The Naxxar Victorians failed to leave the pitch with all three points. However, there were a number of positives to take from the 4-1 defeat suffered against second-placed side San Gwann ProEvolution Academy.

Speaking to the MAFA’s matchday review programme, centre-back Jonathan Cutajar even went ahead to say that the performance on Saturday was the best the team has had despite the scoreline.

“From the first match of the season to this one, I believe this was our best match as a team – we were much more united,” Cutajar said.

“In the first round, we struggled in this area all the time. With time and matches going by, as players, we grew together more, and I think that this was one of our best. I’m certain that the score does not show our performance.

Asked about the difficulty of having to start the round with two tough matches against the top two sides in the league, with both leaders Zebbug Youngsters and San Gwann having been dominant this season, Cutajar believes the toughest is over.

“Our next match is against Zebbug (Youngsters). After the game we played today, I’m sure we won’t be disheartened as today we’ve played against those whom I believe are the best team in the league despite not being first in the standings. But we are not afraid and we’re going to continue playing every game with the aim to win.”

The Victorians were the more dangerous side in the opening minutes, even going close to scoring the opener. However, it was San Gwann who made the most of two Victorians mistakes, scoring from both lapses in concentration to head into the break 2-0.

The second half was a continuation of the first with San Gwann going further ahead from a freekick and a well-placed chip from a counter-attack.

But it was not all over for the Victorians, who earned a shot from the spot after a San Gwann defender handled the ball inside the box. Top scorer Fabrizio Farrugia made no mistake to hit home.

Shouts for another clear penalty were waved away by the referee as the match ended 4-1.

Naxxar Victorians face Zebbug Youngsters on Saturday, February 19.
