Following this week’s Malta Amateur Football Association meeting, Naxxar Victorians will be heading to the big league as from this season! This decision was confirmed by MAFA officials after the introduction of three new teams which will all start from the Second Division next October.
The news of automatic promotion has come as quite the shock for club officials, especially after placing fourth last season.
Club President, Karl Borg explained that, “Although it feels good to play in the highest division of the league, it is something we had not prepared for as a committee and we now have to turn things around and discuss how to deal with this enormous step upwards.”
Naxxar Victorians FC will now face former Division Two title winners and runners up, San Giljan Saints and Qormi Hotspurs (respectively); as well as third place team, Tal-Qroqq Versity. The latter were also promoted automatically last season due to the disqualification of Valletta Stars and the departure of Santa Lucia Falcons from MAFA.
Although this was not something the club was expecting, Manager, Luke Camilleri confirmed that he is confident that the squad is capable of facing all the top teams this season. He added that with the addition of the new players as well as our new fitness coach, David Spiteri, the club can continue to challenge in the league’s both divisions.
