Luke Camilleri confirmed that he shall continue to be in charge of Naxxar Victorians FC’s squad next season last weekend during NIGHT OF THE VICTORIANS. Amidst speculation revolving around the idea that Camilleri could take a different post with another local club, the club had been at a crossroads as to whether a new coach would have to be appointed or not. However, both Camilleri and President, Karl Borg have made it very clear that an arrangement has been made to keep him at the club for the coming season.
Camilleri spoke to naxxarvictorians.com about this decision which can eventually shape up our second season in MAFA. Asked about the reason, Camilleri remarked that, “I chose to stay for another year as I enjoyed working working with this great group of players who I’ve met along this journey!”
Club president, Karl Borg explained that the uncertainty, “was a problem for the club, for us mainly because it affects both the image of the club and even the chances of us increasing our sponsorship. Thankfully he has decided to stay with us and that solves one of our main problems for the coming season!”
During the awards ceremony, Camilleri spoke about next season’s Pre-season training. He insisted that the training would be focused mainly on work with the ball. “I know that with what I’ve got at my disposal and maybe add a few more to them, we can try to achieve our ultimate goal [i.e.] promotion” . Speaking to the players in attendance, Camilleri said that, “Everybody has a fighting chance to stay in the team, but everybody has to work hard to be part of it.”
Camilleri joined the club as a player in September. However, he featured in no more than two matches throughout the season due to injury which kept him away from the pitch. Following the departure of Anthony Spiteri as head coach, it was Borg who took the reigns as care-taker coach. This went on until Camilleri stepped up in February and proved to be the better manager for the club. Last season, Camilleri has gone as long as four unbeaten matches, getting wins against both Mosta and Mqabba and two important draws versus Tal- Qroqq and title winners, San Giljan.
After a great first season, the club sought after a great ending as well. The ceremony, which took place at YUE Bistro by Munchies was hosted by Matthew Gauci. The event showcased five awards: ‘Fan-Favourite Award’, ‘Top-Scorer’, ‘Most Improved Player’, ‘Player’s Player’ and finally the ‘Best Player’ award.
